Tips for Grandparents: Raising Grandchildren Better

Congratulations on becoming a grandparent to a little bundle of joy. True, your grandkids are your most prized possession. You want to enjoy the best time of your life with these tiny tots. Perhaps raising your grandchildren will take you back in time when you raised your own kids. Don’t be surprised if you are unreasonably crazy in love for your grandchildren. But there are a few tips for grandparents on raising grandkids. You would do better if you understand the fine line separating you from your grandchildren.

Tips for grandparents on raising grandchildren

Take Modern Grandparenting Easy

As a grandparent, you think you are more than a babysitter for your tiny tots. But times have changed since the time you raised your own kids. If your aim is to be helpful, be empathetic with the parents of your grandchildren. Do not feel offended if there are differences between your nurturing experience and that of the new parents.

Modern parenting will be different from your experience. If you think your own children need to be more disciplined in raising kids, you have got to remind yourself that modern parenting is different from that of your times. There is nothing to feel offended if the response from the other side is a “No” to your suggestion.

Abide by the rules of your adult children, since the child-rearing rules change with every generation. Respect the generation gap and be at ease with yourself.

Beware of Being Invasive for Grandchildren

You are curious to offer child-rearing advice to the parents of your grandkids. But make sure you aren’t too invasive, as the new parents may not welcome unsolicited advice. Less is more when it comes to giving advice to the new parents. They may consider it meddlesome if you take too much interest in the raising of your grandchildren.

Unless they ask you for suggestions on child-rearing, assume that they want you to listen and understand their feelings. Modern parents do not want to listen to old ways of raising children. No doubt your child raising experience matters, but only for those who want to listen.

Don’t Interfere With What Grandkids Eat

Perhaps you want to offer a special treat to your grandkids. But it would be considered interference by their parents who are trying to inculcate healthy eating habits in their kids. Times have changed since your youth and many things considered healthy by people of your age are banned by today’s generation.

So if parents don’t want their kids to relish sweets, chips, chocolates, muffins, or fizzy drinks, then you would do well by respecting their food habits. Nothing annoys parents more than someone interfering in their kid’s eating habits. They may see it as a breach of their trust.

One of the most important tips for grandparents is to consult with parents first about any particular treat that you want to offer grandchildren. You never know your grandchild may be allergic to what you want them to eat.

Grandparenting Isn’t a Competition

If you are the new father’s mother, you are more likely to feel that you are the second best. You may be made to feel that your daughter-in-law’s mother gets a preferential treatment when it comes to raising grandchildren. But remember, grandparenting is not a competition. Instead, your focus should be on how to nurture your relationship with love and affection.

Buying expensive gifts for grandkids to attract them is not a good idea. You may be tempted to buy them electrical gadgets that your grown-up children may not approve of.

It is a good idea to ask parents of your grandchildren as to what the kids need and like. You may want to associate grandparents with love, care, and affection, not with presents.

Be consistent in your approach, play to your strengths, and don’t waste time in petty squabbles.

  • Do not try to be the parent. It’s not your role to raise your grandkids. Respect the decisions of your children. They will want the best for their kids.
  • Substitute gift giving with enjoyable activities that can create memories.
  • Avoid going off the limits when it comes to nurturing your grandchildren. Do not give in to every whim of your grandchild, as it can infuriate their parents.
  • Spend quality time with grandchildren. Engage in playful activities approved by their parents so nobody feels offended. Take them to the park or nearby beach to make some happy memories.
  • Be more constructive in praising One of the most valuable tips for grandparents is that you should avoid making the mistake of over-praising kids without any reason. This type of inappropriate praise can have a negative impact on your grandchildren. • Do not have any expectations from grandchildren or their parents.
